FREIGHT BROKER

A Broker for Freight That Has to Arrive on Time

Most freight brokers can find a truck. The difference shows when the load is urgent: how fast someone answers, whether the right vehicle is free tonight, and who is watching the shipment once it leaves the dock. A broker that runs steady weekly lanes well can still struggle with a part that has to be in another state by morning.

ExpeditedFreight.com is a broker built for that second kind of freight. We book dedicated trucks from cargo vans to 53 ft trailers, put freight on the next flight out when the road is too slow, and assign one expeditor who stays on the load from quote to signature.

Before you tender a load to any broker, ask who answers at 2 a.m., which vehicle sizes they can actually dispatch, and how you will hear about delays. A good broker answers all three without hesitating. We give you those answers before the quote, so you know who is handling your freight and how.

The three options below cover most of the urgent loads we book. The rest of this page explains how to judge any broker, us included, against your own freight.

SMALL URGENT LOADS sprinter-vans

Sprinter Vans

A dedicated cargo van carries up to 3,000 lbs of parts, cartons or a few pallets. It is the quickest truck to dispatch and runs straight to the delivery. Vans are also the easiest vehicle to find at short notice, nights and weekends included.

FULL TRAILER LOADS 53-ft-dry-vans

53 ft Dry Vans

A 53 ft dry van carries up to about 42,000 lbs in an enclosed trailer. On long expedited runs we can put two drivers on it so the truck keeps moving. We confirm the driver plan with you before dispatch, so the delivery time is set on the same call.

Next Flight Out

We book your freight on the first available commercial flight and arrange trucks at both ends. It is the usual choice when no truck can cover the distance before the deadline. Your expeditor books the airline space and the trucks together, so there is one contact for the whole move.

Size is not the same as fit

A revenue ranking shows which brokers are biggest, not which one suits your freight.

Best broker Choosing one

Best depends on your freight

Which broker is best depends on the freight in front of you, not on a ranking.

Most lists of top freight brokers rank companies by revenue. Revenue shows size, not whether a broker handles your kind of freight well. A broker built for steady truckload lanes may struggle with a Sprinter van load booked at midnight. A broker that excels at urgent freight may not be the cheapest choice for flexible pallets.

So start with your own freight: its size, the mode, how urgent it is and how often it moves. The best broker for you is the one that fits those answers and proves it is legitimate.

What to look for Fit criteria

What makes a broker the best fit

When speed counts but you still want a broker you can rely on, a few criteria tell you more than any ranking. Each one can be tested before you tender a load.

Look at the equipment range, from cargo vans to 53 ft trailers, hot shots and air. Check how quickly a quote comes back, and whether a person answers after hours and on weekends. Ask whether one contact owns your load from quote to delivery, and how updates are sent. A clear rate confirmation matters, and so does prompt payment to carriers, which keeps trucks willing to haul for that broker.

These criteria matter most on urgent freight, where a slow reply or a missing vehicle size costs real time. We meet them on every load and confirm the plan with you before dispatch.

Rule of thumb

Not tied to one yard

A non-asset broker can book any vehicle that fits, which matters for urgent, odd-size freight.

Broker models Types

Asset-based, non-asset, agent or digital

While an asset-based broker can lean on its own trucks, a non-asset broker is often better for urgent freight needing an unusual size. The model shapes how your load is handled.

An asset-based broker is a carrier with a brokerage arm, so it tends to fill its own trucks first. A non-asset broker books licensed carriers across the market and can choose any vehicle that fits. An agent-based brokerage runs through independent agents under one license, so service depends on the agent. A digital marketplace lets shippers book loads in an app, which suits standard truckloads with flexible timing.

For expedited freight, speed, equipment range and a person on the phone matter most. This makes a non-asset expedited broker a practical choice when the truck you need is not the one parked in someone's yard.

Honest answer

It depends on your loads

Brokers pay off most on urgent, irregular or varied freight that one carrier cannot cover.

Worth it? Honest answer

Is a freight broker worth it?

Freight brokers usually arrange loads with many licensed carriers, including vans, straight trucks, trailers and flatbeds. This means a shipper gets access to far more capacity than one carrier relationship provides.

A broker is worth it when you need vehicle choice, fast coverage on urgent or irregular loads, or one contact who manages the move. Going direct to a carrier can work well when you have steady lanes and a carrier you trust. Many shippers do both.

The broker earns a margin between what the shipper pays and what the carrier is paid. That margin covers finding the truck, managing the load and taking responsibility for the details. At ExpeditedFreight.com, our dispatch team is available around the clock, including weekends and holidays, and we work to make sure your freight arrives on time.

The Real Difference Between a Broker and a Logistics Partner

John Mark Peterson, one of AirFreight.com's top expediting agents, joins Kevin Carpenter to talk about what it's really like inside a traditional truckload brokerage, and why he left it behind. From "boiler room" sales culture to carrier accountability to what happens when a shipment is actually time critical, John Mark breaks down the differences most customers never see.

They cover the vetting process behind AirFreight.com's carrier pool, why "somewhat time critical" doesn't mean the same thing everywhere, and how a company built for the most urgent loads operates differently from a volume-driven brokerage. The episode closes with a fast round of personal questions on the On Air Gauntlet.

Freight Broker Questions Answered

What is a freight broker?

A freight broker is a company licensed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to arrange freight transportation for shippers. The broker does not usually own trucks. Instead, it finds a licensed carrier with the right equipment, agrees the rate, books the load and manages it through delivery, including tracking and paperwork. Brokers hold federal operating authority, keep a surety bond on file and carry insurance. Shippers use brokers to reach more capacity and vehicle types than they could through one carrier, to cover urgent or irregular loads quickly and to have one contact responsible for each shipment.

How does a freight broker differ from a carrier?

A carrier owns or leases trucks and employs or contracts drivers who physically haul freight. It holds motor carrier authority and is responsible for the truck, the driver and the cargo in its care. A freight broker arranges transportation by matching loads with carriers but does not haul the freight itself. Brokers offer access to many carriers and vehicle types, while a single carrier offers only its own fleet. Some companies are both: asset-based carriers often run brokerage divisions. For shippers, a carrier suits steady lanes with known capacity, and a broker suits varied, urgent or hard-to-cover loads.

What is broker operating authority?

Broker operating authority is federal permission to arrange the transportation of regulated freight for compensation across state lines. It is granted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and identified by an MC number. To keep it active, a broker must maintain a surety bond or trust fund and a designated process agent in each state. The authority's status appears in the FMCSA's public records, which show whether it is active, pending, inactive or revoked. Shippers should confirm a broker's authority is active before tendering freight, since a broker without valid authority is operating illegally.

What is a freight broker surety bond?

A freight broker surety bond is a financial guarantee that brokers must keep on file to hold federal operating authority. The required amount is $75,000, held as a bond or a trust fund. If a broker fails to pay a carrier or meet its obligations, claims can be made against the bond. The broker pays a premium to a surety company to maintain it. The bond's status is visible in FMCSA's public records alongside the broker's authority. A cancelled bond leads to the authority being revoked, which is why checking both is a basic step in checking any broker.

What is double brokering?

Double brokering happens when a broker or carrier accepts a load and then passes it to another company without the shipper's knowledge or consent. In its fraudulent form, a bad actor posing as a carrier takes a load, re-brokers it to a real carrier, collects payment from the original broker and never pays the carrier who hauled it. The shipper may face delays, cargo loss or claims from unpaid carriers. Warning signs include unfamiliar carrier names at pickup and changed contact details. Working with a verified broker that confirms the assigned carrier in writing helps prevent it.

What is an asset-based freight broker?

An asset-based freight broker is a company that owns trucks and trailers and also runs a brokerage operation. When it receives a load, it may haul it with its own fleet or broker it to an outside carrier if its trucks are busy or the lane does not fit. The advantage is direct control over some capacity. The trade-off is that the company may favor its own equipment, which is not always the best fit for the load. For urgent freight that needs a specific vehicle size or air transport, a broker that books across the whole market can be more flexible.

What is a non-asset freight broker?

A non-asset freight broker does not own trucks. It arranges every load with licensed carriers, choosing whichever vehicle and carrier best fits the shipment. Because it is not tied to a fleet, it can offer a wide range of equipment, from cargo vans to flatbeds, and often air options as well. Non-asset brokers compete on service, speed and the ability to cover loads, rather than on the size of a fleet. They are common in expedited freight, where the right vehicle has to be found quickly and the shipper wants one person managing the move.

What is a digital freight marketplace?

A digital freight marketplace is an online platform where shippers post loads and carriers accept them, often with instant pricing and booking through an app or website. It reduces phone calls and paperwork for standard truckload freight with predictable requirements. The trade-offs are less personal service, limited help when something goes wrong and less flexibility for unusual freight, small vehicles or urgent air moves. Many digital marketplaces are licensed brokers themselves. They work well for routine lanes, while urgent or complex shipments usually benefit from a person who can solve problems in real time.

What is a 3PL?

A 3PL, or third-party logistics provider, is a company that manages part of a shipper's logistics on its behalf. Services can include transportation management, freight brokerage, warehousing, inventory management, order fulfillment and returns. Some 3PLs focus mainly on transportation and act much like brokers, while others run warehouses and handle the whole supply chain. The term is broad, so it helps to ask what a 3PL actually does. A freight broker can be considered a type of 3PL when it arranges transportation for shippers, but not every 3PL offers the same range of services.

What is a rate confirmation?

A rate confirmation is the written agreement for a specific load. Between a broker and a carrier, it sets out the rate, pickup and delivery details, equipment, appointment times and payment terms. Shippers often receive a similar confirmation or load tender from their broker. It matters because it records exactly what was agreed before the truck rolls, which helps prevent disputes over price, timing or responsibilities. Reading it carefully, and making sure the pickup and delivery details match your shipment, is a simple step that avoids most misunderstandings.
