Box Trucks

If you’re in urgent need of expedited transportation, our box truck express freight service might be the answer to your problems. Box trucks consist of a square enclosed body mounted on a frame behind a separate cab. The rear loading door is often the roller shutter style, although some come with swing out doors. They hold more freight than a Sprinter van, but not as much as a straight truck.

What are Box Trucks?

Most box trucks have a hood in front of the windshield, like a scaled-down semi-tractor, but a growing proportion are of the cabover design. This puts the driver nearer the front of the truck, which improves visibility and safety.

A box truck’s floor is below standard loading dock height, so they’re not loaded and unloaded by backing up to a dock. They can be loaded with pallets by a fork truck, but the alternative is to use a ramp. Some box trucks are equipped with a liftgate that takes the effort out of loading and unloading.

Box trucks are ideal for time critical shipping and hot shot freight delivery. They’re small enough to be driven quickly and easily through congested downtowns, and have the tight turning circle needed for maneuvering in alleys and packed parking lots. At the same time, they’re more than capable of making long highway journeys. When it’s required, they’re even used for cross-border expedited shipping.
Ground Transportation-1-1

Box trucks bridge the divide between small cargo carriers and bigger freight solutions.

Cargo-1

Cargo capacity up to 4 pallets, maximum payload 5,000 lbs.

Package tracking

Ideal for city navigation while also handling substantial payloads.

Hub to spoke

Cabover box trucks are particularly adept for navigating urban and suburban settings.

Box Truck Cargo Capacity

The limit is usually four standard pallets, although larger box trucks may be able to take eight. Alternatively, load these trucks up with totes, bins, cartons, and whatever other form of containers that need express delivery. Total interior volume is typically around 564 cubic feet, although some box trucks have additional storage space above the cab.

In terms of payload, most box trucks top out at 5,000 lbs, some models will take a little more.

Fuel efficiency varies depending on the model and load, but box trucks generally strike a balance between power and economy, making them a practical choice for short- to medium-haul expedited deliveries. Their boxy design maximizes interior space while keeping the vehicle compact enough to maneuver through tight streets and loading zones.

TYPES OF CARGO

These trucks are ideal for small quantities of things that need to be sent somewhere as fast as possible. They’re favored by industries from oil and gas production to aerospace and automotive for hot shot shipping of urgently needed items like tools, spares, and materials. Examples include:

Checkmark
Urgently needed replacement parts like pumps and motors (as when a machine or process is down)
Checkmark
Production materials or components, what’s often considered “Line down” freight where a factory is stopped or about to stop
Checkmark
Test, inspection, and measurement equipment too bulky or heavy for a Sprinter
Checkmark
Tooling being sent out for repair or being returned to the plant/site (another form of “Line down” freight)
Checkmark
Large or bulky spare parts
Checkmark
Engines, transmissions, anything similar that can be strapped to a pallet or cradle

Range and Routes

Box trucks are ideal for moving expedited freight quickly across town, across state, or even across country. For longer journeys, a major advantage of box trucks over larger vehicles is their ability to pass under low bridges. That lets them use shorter, quicker routes, and the same goes for using roads with weight limits on them.

A box truck will typically go 250 – 350 miles between refueling stops. While they’re most often put to work on shorter journeys in metropolitan areas, they’re more than capable of making quick sprints across state when expedited trucking is what’s needed.

End to End Solutions

Box trucks offer significant advantages for businesses relying on expedited freight services, combining versatility, efficiency, and accessibility into a single solution. Their ability to navigate urban and suburban environments with ease ensures timely deliveries, even in congested areas where larger freight vehicles struggle. With capacities ranging from four to eight standard pallets—or ample room for totes, bins, and cartons—they provide flexibility to handle diverse cargo types, meeting the urgent needs of express shipping.

For businesses, this translates to faster service, reduced downtime, and cost-effective operations, all critical in maintaining a competitive edge in time-sensitive logistics.

Box trucks usually only require a standard driver’s license when GVWR is under 26,000 lbs. Some states or localities may have additional licensing, permitting, or operational requirements, particularly if the vehicle is being used for commercial purposes. Drivers should ensure compliance with all regulations.

Box Truck Advantages

Box trucks deliver substantial benefits for expedited deliveries, thanks to their agility, compact build, and adaptability. The enclosed cargo space offers a safe, weather-resistant environment, safeguarding valuable shipments throughout their journey. Unlike bigger freight haulers, their smaller stature allows them to glide through city streets, cramped lanes, and busy loading areas with agility, speeding up delivery times significantly.

Capabilities

Box trucks feature a boxy structure mounted on a sturdy chassis, providing ample payload capacity and generous interior room while remaining compact enough to handle urban roads. Their spacious design accommodates a variety of loads, including multiple pallets, drums, totes, or even wheeled carts and shelving. For those needing extra room, certain models offer additional cargo space above the cab.

Cargo-1

Loading

Whether featuring a cabover layout or the traditional hood-forward style, box trucks strike a balance—agile enough for city streets and parking areas, yet spacious enough to haul substantial cargo. Equally dependable and efficient on highways as they are at sports venues or trade shows, they embody unmatched flexibility. This versatility positions box trucks as a top pick across diverse sectors, from logistics and delivery to mobile retail ventures.
Versatility

Versatility

Regardless of whether they sport a cabover setup or the conventional hood-forward look, box trucks offer agility for navigating city roads and parking spaces while still boasting the capacity to transport meaningful loads. They perform with equal reliability and utility on open highways as they do at stadiums or convention centers, potentially making them the pinnacle of adaptability. This all-purpose nature renders box trucks a go-to option for industries spanning courier services to temporary storefronts.
Regulations

Regulations

Similar to a Sprinter, box trucks generally don’t demand a commercial driver’s license for operation. A regular driver’s license typically suffices when the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) stays below 26,000 lbs. Despite their blocky shape, they also achieve decent fuel efficiency, helping to keep operational expenses in check. For those prioritizing a mix of speed, affordability, and dependability, Sprinter van service shines as an exceptional choice, guaranteeing that time-sensitive shipments arrive promptly and safely.

End to End Emergency Solutions with the Box Truck Service

Imagine you build high-end audio equipment for recording studios, some of the best available anywhere, and you’re assembling an instrument for a one-off, special event. Invitations have gone out to guests and the media, and your instrument absolutely has to be available when promised, or there will be consequences.

Imagine further, you’re in California and the event is 2,000 miles away in Indiana. You’ve arranged to air freight the instrument on a Friday so it can be on site Monday. And late Friday night you hear your shipment missed the flight. What do you do?

In this case, they picked up the phone and called us. Our freight expeditors sprang into action figuring out the best option. Their solution was to use a dedicated truck, which we thought was better than airfreight because there would be less risk of damage and greater ability to track progress and identify any real or potential delivery problems. Plus, with a dedicated truck, there are no stops en route to pick up or drop off other items of freight.

The client said yes, and our driver picked up the equipment early Saturday morning. We got it to where it needed to be 10 hours ahead of schedule. Now, when the client needs something moved door to door as fast as humanly possible, their first call will be to us.

Trusted by Our Most Valuable Partners

Industries We Serve

Aviation & Aerospace

Every minute a commercial airliner is grounded costs airlines money. ExpeditedFreight.com helps get flights back in the air with fast delivery of parts and equipment across North America, using a nationwide carrier network and dedicated box trucks, straight trucks, and tractor-trailers to provide reliable, aviation-specific transportation solutions.

Construction

Because one shipping delay can snowball and cause delays throughout your entire project, you need an experienced 3PL provider who understands the construction industry and has the logistical reach to deliver your freight on time, anywhere. That 3PL partner is ExpeditedFreight.com. From heavy machinery and building materials to specialized tools and equipment, our logistics solutions are tailored to keep your project on track. With a robust network of carriers and expertise in handling oversized, time-sensitive, and critical shipments, we ensure that every delivery arrives exactly when and where it’s needed.

Energy

The consequences from lost power production are serious for any business. Equipment failure is one of the biggest causes of energy production downtime. Losses compound exponentially with delay, loss of energy capacity, or the idling of plants for scheduled or unscheduled maintenance. Whether it's a hydroelectric power station or solar farm, you need a 3PL provider who can move your parts and equipment safely and securely while meeting your most stringent deadlines.

Manufacturing

Every moment a manufacturing facility or factory sits idle costs a company money due to the high costs involved in lost sales and lost customers. With many manufacturers building to just-in-time production rates, any disruption threatens parts and vehicle inventories. This is where the speed, expertise, and experience of freight services from AirFreight.com make a difference throughout the entire manufacturing supply chain.

Oil & Gas

The oil and gas industry faces challenging conditions in offshore and onshore oil rigs, often in remote locations with limited infrastructure. Don’t let oil pumps or pipelines sit idle, waiting for equipment. By having the right plans, parts, people, and a logistics partner such as ExpeditedFreight.com, you can effectively mitigate plant or pump downtime, unscheduled disruptions, and equipment failures.

Renewables & Environment

Wind turbines can be as tall as an 85-story building with a blade radius of an acre. Transporting just one wind turbine can take up to nine separate shipments. Solar equipment includes sensitive electronics and glass that are easily subject to damage. Constructing one solar panel requires nearly 40 different components, including precious metals, that need to get to the factory on time. With requirements like this, it's critical to work with the right 3PL provider that can flex with your needs when situations and requirements change.

Retail

During downtime, retailers experience lost sales with the inability to process credit cards, access customer purchasing history, or locate items in stock at a distribution center or another retail location. Don’t let unexpected downtime due to point-of-sale equipment failures impact your brand or frustrate your customers. If you can’t serve your customers, your competition will!

Technology

Unexpected IT downtime can bring down even the largest businesses—just ask airlines when their reservation systems go offline. The importance of e-commerce, online sales, and the computing infrastructure that supports it makes getting systems and servers up and running even more critical. With 98% of organizations reporting that a single hour of downtime costs over $100,000, you can’t afford a slow logistics partner.

3PL

With today’s broken supply chains, even companies that specialize in logistics find themselves needing help. We provide an expansive network of expedited ground and air shipping options to make the trip in the air, to and from the airport, or complete the entire delivery on the ground. Through these resources and our centralized planning operations, we help 3PL providers overcome all the challenges of their industry.
