In short

The shipment decides

Size, distance, deadline and handling set the best option.

Best freight shipping Why it depends

Why best depends on the shipment

There is no single best freight shipping option, because the right choice depends on the shipment. A few boxes of parts, a pallet of medical supplies, a load of steel and a trailer full of retail stock each need something different. The size and weight of the freight, the distance, the deadline and how it must be handled all shape the answer.

The cheapest option is not always the best one. When a shipment is late, the cost of a stopped line, an empty shelf or a missed event can be far higher than the cost of moving it faster. In other cases, a slower, planned option is the sensible choice.

ExpeditedFreight.com looks at each shipment and recommends the option that fits it best, from a dedicated van to a full trailer or a flight.

Worker loading a truck
Why it matters

The load picks the vehicle

The smallest vehicle that fits is often the quickest.

Vehicles Matching the vehicle

Matching the shipment to a vehicle

For freight on the road, the best option usually starts with the right vehicle. A Sprinter van carries up to 3,000 lbs, suited to boxes and a pallet or two. A box truck carries up to 5,000 lbs, and a straight truck up to 9,000 lbs, often with a liftgate for sites without a dock. A hot shot carries up to 16,000 lbs on an open deck for heavy parts and equipment.

For full loads, a 53 ft dry van carries up to 42,000 lbs of enclosed freight, and a flatbed up to 48,000 lbs of steel, lumber or machinery. When the distance is too great to drive in time, air freight flies the shipment on the next suitable flight, same day hand carry sends a courier with a small item, and an air charter flies a whole aircraft.

ExpeditedFreight.com arranges each of these and matches the vehicle to the load.

Construction workers on site
The rule

Best means different things

Uptime, shelves, patients and opening times each set the priority.

Industries How industries define best

How industries define best

Different industries mean different things by the best freight shipping, and the best freight shipping for one business may not suit another. For a manufacturer, best means keeping the line running, so a missing part moves on the fastest dedicated truck available. For retailers and e-commerce sellers, best means restocking shelves and warehouses on time, often with planned full loads and urgent top-ups.

Hospitals and medical suppliers need reliable, careful delivery with a clear record of each handoff. Construction and energy companies need heavy materials and equipment delivered to job sites and remote locations, usually on flatbeds and hot shots. Trade show exhibitors and event planners need everything at the venue before a fixed opening time.

Knowing what best means for the business helps choose the right option. ExpeditedFreight.com works with each of these industries and tailors the recommendation to the shipment.

The upshot

Complete details find the best option

Weights, dimensions and site details make the quote accurate.

Quote details An accurate quote

What goes into an accurate quote

An accurate quote is the fastest way to the best freight shipping option. It starts with what the freight is, the number of pieces and the weight and dimensions of each, including pallet sizes. Say whether the freight can be stacked, how it is packed and how it will be loaded and unloaded.

Add the pickup and delivery addresses, dock hours, contacts at each end and the dates the freight is ready and must arrive. Mention whether either site needs a liftgate, has limited access or requires an appointment. Flag anything that needs special handling, such as hazardous materials, fragile items or freight that must stay dry.

With complete details, the right option can be matched the first time, without surprises at pickup. ExpeditedFreight.com uses these details to recommend the best fit and confirm the quote.

Finding the best option

Finding the best option, step by step

A typical shipment follows six steps from the first details to delivery, and ExpeditedFreight.com arranges each one.

  1. 01

    Share the details

The shipper shares the freight, its weights and dimensions, both addresses, site details and the deadline.

    • Weight and size
    • Deadline
  2. 02

    Compare the options

Truck and air options are compared for the freight and distance, and the best fit is recommended.

    • Truck or air
  3. 03

    Confirm and book

The quote is confirmed, and the truck or flight is booked with an agreed pickup time.

    • Pickup time
  4. 04

    Pick up and sign

The freight is loaded and secured, and the driver signs the bill of lading with the piece count.

    • Bill of lading
  5. 05

    Move direct

The truck drives straight to the receiver, or the freight flies with trucks at both ends, with updates along the way.

    • Updates
  6. 06

    Deliver with proof

The receiver checks and signs for the freight, and proof of delivery closes the shipment.

    • Proof of delivery

The upshot

Service matters as much as speed

Quick answers, one contact and honest updates make it work.

Service Signs of good service

Signs of good service

The best freight shipping also depends on the service around it. A good provider answers quickly, asks the right questions about the freight and recommends an option that fits, rather than whatever is easiest to book. One point of contact who follows the shipment from booking to delivery means questions are answered and nothing is lost between handoffs.

Honest updates matter as much as speed. If weather, traffic or a late flight changes the arrival time, the shipper should hear it early. At the end, a signed proof of delivery confirms when the freight arrived and who received it.

These are the things that make a shipment go right. ExpeditedFreight.com works this way on every load, with one expeditor tracking each shipment and recommending the best option for it.

First time customer

First time customer. Communication was fantastic throughout the entire process and is sincerely appreciated. Our customer shared an update this morning that the driver texted a little before 5 am that he would be there at 8. That’s exactly when he pulled in. She said it was a much easier process than she ever thought it would be and was very grateful.

Glad I don't need all the time, but when I do...

AirFreight handled my unusual situation (my perspective) seamlessly. In response to my first call for assistance, a professional (kind, even) HUMAN answered immediately. From there, communication at every stage was clear and thorough. AirFreight is an example of how a service operation is supposed to work.

Zero problems, ahead of schedule

My only criticism is that there isn’t an option for more than five stars. I’ve been burned by more hotshot brokers than I can count, and this is the first time I’ve had a shipment show up ahead of schedule with absolutely zero damage or tampering. I could not recommend AirFreight more strongly, we will be using them exclusively going forward. A bit higher priced but frankly inexpensive compared to the problems caused by prior shippers. 11/10, no notes.

Best Freight Shipping Questions Answered

What is the best way to ship freight?

The best way to ship freight depends on the shipment. Small urgent loads often move best on a dedicated van, pallets and partial loads on a box truck or straight truck, heavy equipment on a hot shot or flatbed, and full loads on a 53 ft dry van. When the distance is too great to drive in time, air freight is usually best. The size, weight, distance, deadline and handling needs decide which option fits. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment.

How do I choose the best freight shipping option?

Start with the freight: its size, weight, packaging and how it will be loaded and unloaded. Then consider the distance and the deadline, and what a delay would cost. Compare road and air options for the shipment, and choose the one that meets the deadline at a sensible cost. A provider that arranges several options can recommend the best fit instead of offering only one kind of truck. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later.

What is the best way to ship pallets?

The best way to ship pallets depends on how many there are and how quickly they must arrive. A pallet or two can move in a Sprinter van, a few pallets in a box truck and several pallets in a straight truck, often with a liftgate for sites without a dock. A full load of pallets suits a 53 ft dry van. For urgent pallets over long distances, air freight can be faster if they fit the aircraft. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later.

What is the best way to ship heavy equipment?

Heavy equipment usually ships best on an open-deck truck. A hot shot carries up to 16,000 lbs on a deck of up to about 40 ft and can be dispatched quickly, which suits urgent machinery, parts and equipment. A flatbed carries up to 48,000 lbs for larger or heavier items. The equipment must be secured properly and may need tarps. Share the exact weight, dimensions and how it will be loaded when booking. Planning ahead makes the delivery go more smoothly. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays.

What is the fastest way to ship freight?

Over long distances, the fastest way to ship freight is usually by air, with an air charter fastest for large loads, same day hand carry for small critical items and next flight out for boxes and pallets. Within driving range, a dedicated truck that leaves at pickup and drives straight to the receiver is often fastest, because there is no airport handling. The fastest option depends on the size of the shipment and the distance. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment.

When is air freight the best option?

Air freight is the best option when a shipment must cover a long distance faster than a truck can drive it, such as across the country in a day. It suits urgent parts, medical supplies, documents and valuable goods that fit the aircraft. The freight is trucked to the airport, flown on the next suitable flight and delivered by truck at the other end. For shorter distances, a dedicated truck is often just as fast. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment.

What information do I need for a freight quote?

For a freight quote, have ready what the freight is, the number of pieces, the weight and dimensions of each, whether it can be stacked and how it is packed. Add the pickup and delivery addresses, dock hours, contacts at each end and the ready and delivery dates. Mention liftgate needs, limited access, appointments and any special handling, such as hazardous materials. Complete details make the quote accurate. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later. Planning ahead makes the delivery go more smoothly.

What makes a freight shipping company good?

A good freight shipping company answers quickly, asks the right questions and recommends an option that fits the shipment. It gives one point of contact who follows the shipment from booking to delivery, shares honest updates when something changes and provides proof of delivery at the end. It can offer several truck types and air options, so it does not have to fit every shipment into one kind of truck. Planning ahead makes the delivery go more smoothly. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays.

Is a dedicated truck worth it?

A dedicated truck is often worth it when freight is urgent, fragile, valuable or too large to share space easily, or when a delay would be costly. The truck carries only that shipment and drives straight to the receiver, with no transfers or terminal stops, which saves time and reduces the risk of damage. For routine freight with flexible timing, a planned shared or full truckload option may be the better value. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment.

How do I book freight shipping?

To book freight shipping, gather the freight details, the pickup and delivery addresses, dock hours, contacts and dates, and share them with a freight provider by phone or quote form. The provider compares the options for the shipment, recommends the best fit, confirms the quote and books the truck or flight. Having the freight ready at pickup and the receiver prepared helps the shipment go smoothly. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later.
