Critical Freight Services

A stopped line or a grounded aircraft can hinge on a single part. Critical freight services move that part by the fastest route that works. ExpeditedFreight.com arranges it by dedicated truck, next flight out, hand carry or charter across the US, Canada and Mexico.

CRITICAL FREIGHT

When One Shipment Decides Whether Work Can Continue

An idle production line, an aircraft waiting for a part or a surgery that cannot be moved all share one problem: the shipment that fixes it is somewhere else. Every hour it spends in a terminal or on a dock adds to the cost.

ExpeditedFreight.com moves that freight by whichever route reaches the destination first. We compare a dedicated truck, the next commercial flight, a hand carry courier and a charter aircraft at the same time, then book the one that makes the deadline and track it to delivery.

Speed is not the only test. Critical freight also has to arrive intact and in the right hands, so we confirm the exact delivery point, the contact on site and any special handling before the shipment moves. Updates come from one expeditor, at every handoff, until the part is signed for.

Most critical shipments end up on one of the three services below. The sections that follow explain what makes freight critical and how each kind is handled.

WITHIN A DAY'S DRIVE sprinter-vans

Sprinter Vans

A dedicated cargo van leaves as soon as it is booked and drives straight to the site. For many regional runs it beats a flight once airport time is counted. Because nothing else rides in the van, the part never waits at a terminal or on a dock.

Next Flight Out

We put the part on the first commercial flight with space, with trucks waiting at both airports. It is often the quickest way to cover long distances. Your expeditor watches the airline cutoff and lines up the delivery driver before the flight lands.

Air Charter

A charter aircraft carries only your freight and departs when it is ready. It is the answer for oversized parts, remote sites or deadlines no airline can meet. Aircraft can be sourced within hours for most critical moves, and we quote the charter before you commit.

The test

What stops if it is late?

If a delay halts a line, an aircraft or a procedure, the freight is critical.

Critical freight What it is

What makes freight critical

Freight becomes critical when its delay stops something important. That might be a production line, an aircraft on the ground, a hospital procedure, a store opening or a project milestone. The shipment itself may be small, but the cost of waiting is large.

That sets critical freight apart from standard expedited freight. Both move faster than normal, but with critical freight the cost of delay outweighs almost any cost of moving it. Speed and certainty come first, and every option is weighed at once.

Why it matters

Speed plus one more need

Line-down, AOG, medical and high-value freight each need speed and something else.

Kinds of freight Common types

The kinds of critical freight

From a gearbox for a stalled line to an aircraft part to a surgical set, we arrange critical freight for operations that cannot wait. Each kind needs speed plus something else.

Line-down parts and tooling need the fastest workable route, because every hour of a stopped plant is lost output. Aircraft-on-ground parts, called AOG, keep a plane out of service until they arrive. Medical devices and hospital supplies need careful handling and a firm delivery time. High-value electronics and equipment need a clear record of who held them along the way.

For each of these, our expeditors work across manufacturing, aviation and healthcare to match the route to the shipment.

Four questions

Distance, size, freight, flights

These four answers decide whether a critical shipment goes by truck or by air.

Choosing the mode Picking the route

Choosing the mode in minutes

A cargo van is smaller than a straight truck but far quicker to dispatch, and a flight is faster than either over long distances. Choosing among them comes down to four things: distance against the deadline, size and weight, what the freight is, and whether a suitable flight exists.

For regional emergencies, a dedicated truck usually wins because it leaves at once and goes door to door. For long runs, a team of two drivers keeps the truck moving. When the distance is too great, a small part goes as hand carry and a crated part on the next flight out. A charter covers large freight when no scheduled flight fits.

We weigh every option together for your shipment and book the one that makes the deadline.

Moving within the hour

Details, options, booking, pickup and updates on a set rhythm until signed delivery.

The process Call to delivery

How a critical shipment runs

While a standard booking can take a day to confirm, a critical shipment is often moving within the hour of your call. It runs on a tight sequence with one person driving it.

First, the details are taken: what the freight is, its size and weight, where it is and when it must arrive. The options are weighed and the vehicle or flight is booked. Pickup is confirmed, and you get updates on a set rhythm until delivery, which is confirmed with a signature.

How fast a pickup happens depends on the distance to the nearest suitable vehicle and, for air, on airline cutoffs. For long-distance emergencies, this makes the combined approach far more practical than booking one mode and hoping it works. We run that sequence for you from the first call to the signed delivery.

Key idea

Fewer handoffs, stronger record

Keeping freight on one vehicle or with one courier makes the chain of custody simple.

Chain of custody High-value handling

Chain of custody for high-value freight

Providers of high-value transport usually keep a record of every handoff, including signatures at pickup and delivery. This means the shipper can see who held the shipment, and when, at every point in the trip.

That record is called the chain of custody. The fewer handoffs a shipment goes through, the simpler and stronger the record is. An exclusive-use truck keeps the freight on one vehicle with one driver from pickup to delivery. For the most valuable small items, hand carry keeps the shipment in one courier's possession on the flight.

Our dispatch team is available around the clock, including weekends and holidays, so a high-value shipment can move as soon as it is ready. We track it the whole way and confirm delivery with a signed receipt.

North American air cargo demand grows as capacity shrinks

More demand and less space on North American flights heading into peak season make a ground backup important for critical shipments.

Why it is happening

Global goods trade keeps growing and peak season is approaching. Airlines are also carrying exceptionally high fuel costs, according to IATA's chief economist.

Critical Freight Questions Answered

What is critical freight?

Critical freight is any shipment whose delay would stop something important or cause serious loss. Typical examples include a replacement part for a stopped production line, a component for an aircraft that cannot fly without it, medical devices needed for a procedure, and high-value equipment with a firm deadline. What makes it critical is not the size of the shipment but the cost of waiting for it. Critical freight is usually moved by the fastest workable route, such as a dedicated truck running direct, the next flight out, a hand carry courier or a charter, with one person managing it from pickup to delivery.

How does critical freight differ from standard expedited freight?

Expedited freight is any shipment moved faster than the standard schedule, usually by dedicated truck or air. Critical freight is a subset of expedited freight where the stakes are highest. With routine expedited freight, the shipper may choose a mode in advance and accept some flexibility. With critical freight, the cost of delay is so high that every option is weighed at once, the fastest route is booked immediately, and the shipment is watched closely all the way. Critical shipments also tend to involve fewer handoffs and more frequent updates, because the shipper often has people, equipment or customers waiting on the outcome.

What is AOG freight?

AOG stands for aircraft on ground. An aircraft is AOG when it cannot fly because it needs a part, a repair or an inspection. AOG freight is the part or tool needed to return it to service, such as an engine component, avionics unit, landing gear part or specialized tooling. Every hour an aircraft sits on the ground costs the operator money and can disrupt schedules, so AOG shipments are among the most urgent in freight. They often move by next flight out or hand carry for smaller parts, by dedicated truck for regional runs, or by charter when the part is large or the location is remote.

What is a line-down shipment?

A line-down shipment is freight needed to restart a production line that has stopped, or is about to stop, because a part, tool or material is missing. Manufacturers running lean inventory can halt an entire assembly line for one component. Line-down shipments are treated as critical freight because the cost of the stoppage, in lost output, idle labor and missed orders, usually far exceeds the cost of moving the part quickly. They commonly move by dedicated truck on regional runs, often in a cargo van or straight truck, and by air or hand carry when the supplier is far away.

What is next flight out service?

Next flight out, or NFO, books a shipment on the first available commercial or cargo flight to its destination. A truck picks up the freight and delivers it to the airline's cargo facility before the cutoff. After landing, another truck collects it and delivers it to the final address. NFO is used when the distance is too great for a truck to meet the deadline. Shipments must fit within the airline's size, weight and security requirements, and some materials cannot fly at all. When no scheduled flight works, an air charter is the alternative for urgent freight.

What is hand carry delivery?

Hand carry, also called on-board courier, is a service where a courier travels with the shipment and keeps it in their possession for the entire trip. The courier collects the item, takes it on a flight as carry-on or checked baggage depending on size, and delivers it in person at the destination. It suits small, critical items such as aircraft parts, medical devices, prototypes and legal documents. Because the item never enters a cargo system, there is no sorting or warehouse handling and a very clear chain of custody. Hand carry is often the fastest way to move a small item over a long distance.

What is chain of custody?

Chain of custody is the documented record of everyone who handled a shipment, and when, from pickup to delivery. Each handoff is recorded, usually with a name, signature, time and location. It matters most for high-value goods, medical items, legal evidence and sensitive government or defense shipments, where the shipper needs proof that nothing was opened, swapped or lost. Fewer handoffs make the chain simpler and stronger. That is why critical and high-value freight often moves on an exclusive-use vehicle or with a hand carry courier. The chain ends with a signed proof of delivery showing who received the shipment.

What is a USDOT number?

A USDOT number is a unique identifier issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to companies that operate commercial vehicles in interstate commerce or haul certain cargo. It is used to track a company's safety record, inspections, crashes and compliance reviews. Carriers display it on their trucks, and anyone can look it up in the FMCSA's public records to see the company's registration and safety data. Freight brokers usually have a USDOT number as well. Checking a provider's USDOT number is a simple first step in confirming that it is a legitimate, registered business before handing over a shipment.

What is an MC number?

An MC number, or motor carrier number, is issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to companies that need operating authority to transport regulated freight for hire across state lines or to arrange such transport as brokers. It shows that the company is authorized to operate as a carrier, a broker or a freight forwarder. Brokers must also file a surety bond or trust fund. Anyone can look up an MC number in the FMCSA's public records to see whether the authority is active and what type it is. An inactive or revoked authority is a warning sign that the company should not be handling freight.

What is FMCSA operating authority?

Operating authority is the federal permission a company needs to transport regulated freight for compensation across state lines, or to arrange that transport as a broker. It is granted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and identified by an MC number. To keep authority active, a company must maintain required insurance or, for brokers, a surety bond, and keep its registration current. The FMCSA's public records show whether a company's authority is active, pending, inactive or revoked, along with its insurance filings. Shippers can check this in a few minutes before booking, which is especially useful when moving urgent or high-value freight.
