FREIGHT CHARTER

Charter the Aircraft or the Truck, on Your Schedule

Scheduled services run on someone else's timetable. An airline flight leaves when the airline says, and a carrier's truck picks up when its route allows. When neither fits the deadline, the size of the freight or the destination, the answer is to hire the whole vehicle.

ExpeditedFreight.com arranges those charters by air and by road. We source the aircraft or truck that fits the shipment, set the departure around when your freight is ready, and assign one expeditor to manage it through delivery.

Charters cost more than scheduled services, so they make sense when the cost of waiting is higher. A stopped plant, a missed launch or a site that no airline serves are typical reasons. We quote the charter alongside the next best scheduled option, so you can see what the time saved is worth before you book.

Below are the three charter options we book most often. The rest of this page explains what a freight charter is and when it is worth the cost.

DEDICATED AIRCRAFT Air charter icon

Air Charter

A charter aircraft carries only your freight and departs when it is ready. Aircraft range from small turboprops for a few pallets to large freighters. We handle the routing, the airports and the trucks at each end, so the freight moves door to door.

Air Charter Services about Dedicated aircraft
TEAM-DRIVEN TRUCK 53-ft-dry-vans

53 ft Dry Vans

For long ground charters, a 53 ft dry van with two drivers keeps moving while one rests. It carries up to about 42,000 lbs. The truck carries only your freight and makes no other stops along the way.

Dry Van Services about Team-driven truck
SMALL GROUND CHARTER sprinter-vans

Sprinter Vans

A cargo van booked for one shipment is the smallest ground charter. It suits urgent parts and a few pallets up to 3,000 lbs. It can be dispatched within hours and is often the fastest choice for regional moves.

Freight charter What it is

What an expedited freight charter is

Whether your priority is a tight deadline, an oversized piece or a remote destination, an expedited charter is a reliable way to move urgent freight. In shipping, charter means hiring the whole vehicle for your shipment.

An expedited freight charter books an entire aircraft, or a dedicated truck, for one urgent shipment. It departs when your freight is ready and goes where you need it, rather than following an airline timetable or a carrier's schedule. Nothing else shares the space, and the route is planned around your deadline.

When to charter

When delay costs more

No flight fits, the freight is too big, the airport is remote or the deadline is hours away.

When to charter When it fits

When a charter makes sense

When next flight out or a team truck isn't the right fit for your shipment, a charter might be the answer. It is the option for freight that no scheduled service can move in time.

That usually means one of a few situations. No scheduled flight has the space, the timing or the route. The freight is oversized or heavy and will not fit through a passenger aircraft's cargo door. The destination is a remote airport with little scheduled service. Or the deadline is measured in hours and every other option arrives too late.

Charter costs more than any scheduled option, so it makes sense when the cost of delay is higher still. A stopped plant, a grounded aircraft or an emergency response are typical examples.

Rule of thumb

Distance decides

Air charter wins over long distances, while ground charter often wins on regional runs.

Air or ground Air vs ground

Air charter or ground charter

Book the vehicle that matches the distance and the freight. We weigh air and ground charter side by side for every urgent shipment.

An air charter is the fastest option over long distances. Aircraft range from small planes for a few urgent parts to large freighters for heavy cargo. Trucks handle pickup and delivery at each end. A ground charter is a dedicated truck booked for one shipment, often with two drivers on long runs. It goes door to door with no airport handling.

Ground charter is often faster on regional runs once airport time is counted. It is also the answer for freight that cannot fly, such as many hazardous materials. Air wins when distance makes the road too slow for the deadline.

A truck meets the aircraft at each end. Aircraft location and airport hours set the departure.

Booking How booking works

How booking a charter works

When you need a charter in the air quickly, complete freight details give you the fastest booking. The process follows a clear sequence.

First, the shipment is described: pieces, dimensions, weight and any restricted contents. An aircraft of the right size is matched and positioned to the nearest suitable airport, which may mean a positioning flight. A truck collects the freight and brings it to the aircraft for loading. After the flight, another truck delivers it to the final address, where it is signed for.

How quickly a charter can depart depends on where the nearest suitable aircraft is and on airport hours. We confirm those details with you before booking, so the timeline is clear from the start.

A scheduled flight or team truck may make the deadline for far less.

Cost What drives cost

What affects the cost of a charter

A small aircraft carries less than a large freighter but costs far less to fly. The right size is the first lever on charter cost. Several other factors follow.

In general terms, the size of the aircraft or truck, the distance and how soon you need it all affect the cost. Positioning matters too: if the nearest suitable aircraft is far from your freight, it has to fly there first. Airport handling and the return leg can add to the total.

Charter is the most expensive way to move freight, so it pays when delay costs more. ExpeditedFreight.com compares a charter with next flight out, hand carry and a team truck before booking. You only charter when nothing else will make the deadline.

Send the number of pieces and the dimensions and weight of each one. Add the pickup and delivery addresses, and the nearest airports if you know them. North American air cargo demand grows as capacity shrinks

More demand and less scheduled space on North American flights heading into peak season can push urgent shipments toward charter.

Expedited Charter Questions Answered

What is an expedited charter?

In freight shipping, an expedited charter is the booking of an entire aircraft, or a dedicated truck, to move one urgent shipment on the shipper's schedule. Instead of waiting for a scheduled flight or a carrier's pickup, the vehicle departs when the freight is ready and goes directly where it is needed. Air charters are used for oversized freight, remote destinations and deadlines that no scheduled flight can meet. Ground charters are dedicated trucks, often with two drivers. Expedited charters cost more than shared options, so they are used when a delay would cost even more.

What does charter mean in shipping?

In shipping, to charter means to hire an entire vehicle, such as an aircraft, ship or truck, for your own use rather than buying space on a shared service. The shipper controls the schedule and the route, within safety and regulatory limits, and the vehicle carries only their cargo. Charters are common in air freight for urgent or oversized shipments, in ocean shipping for bulk cargo, and in trucking where a dedicated truck is booked for one load. The term comes from the charter agreement, the contract that sets out the vehicle, route, timing and price.

What is an air cargo charter?

An air cargo charter is a flight booked exclusively for one shipper's freight. The aircraft is chosen to fit the shipment, from small planes for a few urgent boxes to large freighters for heavy machinery or oversized pieces. It departs when the cargo is ready and flies to the airport closest to the destination, including smaller airports without scheduled cargo service. Trucks handle pickup and final delivery. Air cargo charters are used for emergencies, oversized freight, remote destinations and situations where scheduled flights lack the space, timing or route needed.

How does charter differ from next flight out?

Next flight out books a shipment on the first available scheduled commercial or cargo flight, sharing the aircraft with other cargo and passengers. It is usually much less expensive than a charter, but it depends on airline timetables, cargo space and size limits. A charter books the entire aircraft, so it departs on the shipper's schedule and can carry larger pieces or fly to airports without scheduled service. Many urgent shipments go next flight out first, with charter used only when no scheduled flight can meet the deadline or fit the freight.

What is a ground charter?

A ground charter is a truck booked exclusively for one shipment, running directly from pickup to delivery on the shipper's schedule. It may be a cargo van, straight truck, hot shot or full tractor-trailer, depending on the freight. On long runs, two drivers can share the truck so it keeps moving. Ground charters are often faster than air on regional distances once airport handling is counted, and they can carry freight that is restricted on aircraft. The term is used interchangeably with exclusive-use or dedicated trucking in expedited freight.

What is a positioning flight?

A positioning flight, sometimes called a ferry flight, is a flight an aircraft makes without cargo to reach the airport where a charter will begin. If the nearest suitable aircraft is based far from the shipper's freight, it must first fly to the origin airport, and that positioning time and cost are usually part of the charter. Positioning can also apply after delivery, when the aircraft returns to its base. Choosing an aircraft based closer to the origin can reduce both cost and the time before departure.

What is an on-board courier?

An on-board courier, also called hand carry, is a person who travels on a commercial flight with a shipment and keeps it in their possession for the whole trip. The courier collects the item, flies with it as carry-on or checked baggage, and delivers it in person. It suits small, critical items such as aircraft parts, medical devices, prototypes and important documents. On-board courier service is often faster and much less expensive than a charter for small items, because it uses scheduled flights while still avoiding cargo handling.

What is AOG freight?

AOG stands for aircraft on ground. An aircraft is AOG when it cannot fly because it needs a part, a repair or an inspection. AOG freight is the part or tool needed to return it to service, such as an engine component, avionics unit or landing gear part. Because a grounded aircraft disrupts schedules and costs the operator money every hour, AOG shipments are among the most urgent in freight. Small parts often move by hand carry or next flight out, while large components or remote locations may need an air charter or a dedicated truck.

What is a part charter?

A part charter is an arrangement where a shipper books only part of a charter aircraft's capacity, sharing the flight with other shippers whose cargo is going the same way. It can lower the cost compared with chartering the whole aircraft, while still offering more flexibility than a scheduled flight. The trade-off is less control over timing and routing, because the flight has to suit all the shippers on board. Part charters are more common on popular routes and for planned shipments than for sudden emergencies, which usually need a full charter.

What is airport-to-door delivery?

Airport-to-door delivery is the final leg of an air shipment, when freight is collected from the arrival airport and trucked to the receiver's address. In charter and next flight out services, it is usually paired with door-to-airport pickup at the origin, so the shipper gets a complete door-to-door move. The truck must be scheduled around the flight's arrival and the airport's cargo hours. Arranging both ends in advance avoids freight sitting at the airport. For oversized cargo, the delivery truck may need a liftgate, a flatbed or a crane at the receiving site.
