EXPEDITED TRUCKING

A Dedicated Truck, Dispatched When Your Freight Is Ready

Standard trucking moves freight on the carrier's schedule. LTL shipments wait at terminals to be sorted, and truckload pickups are often booked days ahead. When a plant, a store or a job site is waiting, those days are the cost.

ExpeditedFreight.com dispatches a truck for your shipment alone, sized to the load, and sends it straight to the delivery with no terminal stops. Long runs can go with two drivers, and the same expeditor tracks the truck from pickup to the dock.

Matching the truck to the load matters as much as speed. A truck that is too small cannot take the freight, and one that is too large costs more and can be harder to find at short notice. We size the truck from the weight, pallet count and dock details you give us, then confirm it before dispatch.

Below are three of the trucks we dispatch most. The sections that follow explain how expedited trucking works and how to match the truck to the load.

CRATES AND A FEW PALLETS sprinter-vans

Sprinter Vans

A cargo van carries up to 3,000 lbs and is the quickest truck to dispatch. It suits parts, cartons and small pallet loads. Vans can often be on the road within hours of booking, nights and weekends included.

Sprinter Van Services about Crates and a few pallets
PARTIAL LOADS large-straight-trucks

Large Straight Trucks

A 22 to 26 ft straight truck takes up to about 9,000 lbs, often with a liftgate. It covers the gap between a van and a full trailer. It can deliver to stores, job sites and plants that do not have a dock.

FULL TRAILERS 53-ft-dry-vans

53 ft Dry Vans

A 53 ft dry van carries up to about 42,000 lbs. With two drivers it can run long distances without stopping for rest breaks. It suits full loads of product, packaged machinery and freight that needs to stay dry.

Expedited trucking What it is

What expedited freight trucking is

Expedited freight trucking puts a shipment on a dedicated truck sized to the load. The truck is dispatched when you book it and runs straight to the delivery address with no terminal stops. Standard LTL shares a truck and sorts freight at terminals. Standard truckload follows a scheduled pickup and usually one driver.

Expedite when a delay would cost more than the faster truck. Ship standard when the date is flexible. Fly when the distance is too great for any truck to make the deadline.

Choosing a truck Vehicles

Matching the truck to the load

While a 53 ft trailer carries far more than a cargo van, the van is often faster to dispatch for a few pallets. Matching the truck to the load is the first decision on any expedited run.

A Sprinter van carries up to 3,000 lbs in 8 to 12 feet of space. A box truck takes up to 5,000 lbs, and a large straight truck up to 9,000 lbs, often with a liftgate. A hot shot carries up to 16,000 lbs of open-deck freight. A 53 ft dry van handles full enclosed loads up to 42,000 lbs, and a full flatbed carries up to 48,000 lbs.

Measure each piece and weigh the load before booking. The smallest truck that fits is usually the quickest to find and the lowest cost to run.

Two drivers keep it moving

A team of two can drive almost around the clock while a solo driver must rest.

Timing Drivers and distance

Distance, drivers and the clock

Expedited carriers usually plan each run around the distance, the driver setup and any border crossing, including the time a driver must rest. This means the arrival depends as much on planning as on the truck.

Federal hours-of-service rules limit how long one driver can drive before a required rest. A solo truck stops each day, so long runs often use a team of two drivers who take turns. Loads to Canada and Mexico add customs paperwork and crossing time. How soon a truck reaches your pickup depends on the nearest suitable vehicle and your dock hours.

For that reason, honest providers explain how a run will be planned rather than promising a fixed time. We set the driver setup and border steps before your truck is dispatched.

Choosing a provider Who to book

Choosing an expedited provider

At ExpeditedFreight.com, we specialize in expedited freight trucking that moves from your dock to delivery with no delays in between. Whoever you book, a few criteria tell you whether a provider fits urgent freight.

Check the range of vehicles, from cargo vans to 53 ft trailers and flatbeds. Ask how quickly a quote comes back and whether someone answers at night and on weekends. Find out whether one person owns your load and how updates are sent. Then confirm the provider's authority and insurance in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's public records.

As with most expedited freight, distance, the truck type, the weight and how soon you need it all affect the cost. The cheapest quote matters less than a truck that actually arrives on time.

If a load runs late The backup plan

If an expedited load runs late

As soon as you request a quote, you're connected with an expeditor who will plan your shipment from start to finish. That includes what happens if something goes wrong.

Traffic, weather, a breakdown or a slow dock can all threaten a delivery window. Good tracking catches the problem early, while there is still time to act. The options then include a fresh truck to take over the load or a second driver to keep it moving. Part of the shipment can also go on the next flight. You get updates on a set rhythm until the freight is delivered.

ExpeditedFreight.com plans those backups before they are needed. Your shipment stays with one expeditor from pickup to delivery, so the person fixing a delay already knows your load.

What is happening

According to Bureau of Transportation Statistics data reported by AJOT, trucks moved $109.0 billion of freight across the US borders with Canada and Mexico in August.

Why it is happening

Freight with Mexico grew fastest of the two borders, and trucks moved far more cross-border freight than rail, the next largest mode.

What it means for you

Busier crossings make preparation matter. We plan expedited cross-border trucks with documents ready before pickup, so freight is not held at the border.

Expedited Trucking Questions Answered

What is expedited freight trucking?

Expedited freight trucking is a service that moves time-critical freight on a dedicated truck that runs directly from pickup to delivery. The truck is sized to the shipment, from a cargo van to a 53 ft trailer or flatbed, and is dispatched when the shipper books it rather than on a fixed schedule. There are no terminal stops or transfers, and long runs may use two drivers so the truck keeps moving. Shippers use it for production parts, retail stock, medical equipment and any freight where a delay would cost more than the premium for speed.

How does expedited trucking differ from standard truckload?

Standard truckload puts one shipper's freight in a full trailer on a scheduled pickup, usually with one driver who stops to rest each day. It is efficient for full loads with some flexibility on timing. Expedited trucking is dispatched as soon as the freight is ready, uses whatever size of truck fits the load, and is planned around a specific deadline. On long runs, two drivers can share the truck to keep it moving. Expedited trucking costs more because it prioritizes speed and uses dedicated equipment even for small shipments.

What does FOB origin mean?

FOB origin, also called FOB shipping point, is a shipping term meaning ownership of the goods passes from the seller to the buyer when the freight leaves the seller's location. From that point, the buyer usually bears the risk of loss or damage in transit and is responsible for filing any freight claim. FOB stands for free on board. The term is often combined with payment terms, such as FOB origin, freight collect, where the buyer also pays the shipping charges. Agreeing the FOB term before shipping makes clear who is responsible if something goes wrong.

What does FOB destination mean?

FOB destination is a shipping term meaning the seller keeps ownership of the goods, and the risk of loss or damage, until the freight is delivered to the buyer's location. If something goes wrong in transit, the seller is usually responsible for the claim. It is often paired with freight prepaid, meaning the seller also pays the shipping charges, though other combinations are possible. Buyers often prefer FOB destination because they are protected until the goods arrive. The term should be written on the purchase order and the bill of lading so everyone knows who is responsible.

What is the difference between prepaid and collect freight?

Prepaid and collect describe who pays the freight charges. With prepaid freight, the shipper pays the carrier or broker and may add the cost to the buyer's invoice. With collect freight, the receiver pays the charges, usually at or after delivery. These payment terms are separate from FOB terms, which describe when ownership passes, though the two are often combined, for example FOB origin, freight collect. The payment term should be marked on the bill of lading so the carrier knows who to bill and the invoice goes to the right party.

Who pays freight on FOB delivered?

FOB delivered, usually the same as FOB destination, means the seller is responsible for the goods until they reach the buyer, and in most cases the seller also pays the freight charges. That makes it common for the shipping cost to be built into the price of the goods. However, the payment term can be negotiated separately, so a buyer and seller could agree on FOB destination with freight collect, where the buyer pays the carrier. The safest approach is to state both the FOB term and the payment term clearly on the purchase order and the bill of lading.

What is a bill of lading?

A bill of lading, or BOL, is the main shipping document for a freight shipment. It lists the shipper, the receiver, the pickup and delivery addresses, and a description of the freight, including the number of pieces, the weight and any special handling notes. It also records payment terms such as prepaid or collect. The driver signs it at pickup and the receiver signs it at delivery, noting any damage or shortage. The signed BOL acts as a receipt for the goods, part of the contract of carriage and often the proof of delivery.

What is a two-driver team?

A two-driver team is two qualified drivers sharing one truck so it can keep moving almost around the clock. While one drives, the other rests in the sleeper berth, and they switch when the driver at the wheel reaches the legal driving limit. Because hours-of-service rules require a solo driver to stop for a long rest each day, a team can cover much more distance in the same time. Teams are common on long expedited runs and high-value freight. On short regional runs, one driver is usually enough to reach the delivery within a shift.

What are hours-of-service rules?

Hours-of-service rules are federal regulations from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration that limit how long commercial truck drivers can drive and work. They set a maximum number of driving hours per shift, an overall on-duty window each day, a required rest break and weekly limits, followed by mandatory off-duty periods. Drivers record their hours on electronic logging devices. Some smaller vehicles fall under different rules depending on their weight rating. For shippers, these rules decide how far one driver can take a load in a day, which is why long expedited runs often use two drivers.

What carrier is expedited shipping?

Expedited shipping is not one carrier but a type of service offered by many companies. Parcel carriers offer faster tiers for small packages. Expedited trucking carriers run dedicated vans, straight trucks and trailers for urgent freight. Airlines and cargo carriers fly time-critical shipments. Freight brokers arrange all of these, matching each load to a licensed carrier or flight and managing it to delivery. For pallets or anything larger than a parcel, a broker or expedited trucking carrier is usually the right choice. ExpeditedFreight.com is a broker and does not hire drivers.
