EXPEDITED LOGISTICS

The Fastest Route That Will Actually Make the Deadline

When freight has to arrive faster than any standard schedule allows, the first question is not which truck but which route. A van, a team-driven trailer, the next commercial flight and a charter aircraft each win in different situations, and the wrong choice can cost the day.

ExpeditedFreight.com weighs those options against your deadline, books the one that fits and stays on the shipment until it is delivered. We arrange expedited freight by ground and air across the US, Canada and Mexico.

Good expedited logistics also means having a backup. If a flight is delayed or a truck breaks down, we know the next best option and can switch quickly. One expeditor stays with the shipment the whole way, so the backup plan starts as soon as something changes.

Here are three of the services we use most. The sections that follow explain what expedited logistics means and how the service levels compare.

GROUND, ANY HOUR box-trucks

Box Trucks

A box truck carries several pallets, up to about 5,000 lbs, on a direct run. It can be dispatched at night or on a weekend. The truck runs straight to the receiver, with no terminal stops or transfers along the way.

Next Flight Out

Freight goes on the first commercial flight with space, with trucks at both ends. It is the usual choice when the drive is too long. We arrange the trucks at both airports, so the freight moves door to door.

Air Charter

A charter aircraft flies only your freight, on your timing. It is used when no airline flight can make the deadline or carry the piece. The aircraft is sized to the freight, from small planes for a few pieces to large freighters for heavy cargo.

Expedited logistics What it means

What expedited logistics means

Expedited logistics means planning and moving freight by the quickest route that will actually meet a deadline. Logistics is the plan around a shipment, including the mode, the vehicle and the timing. Shipping is the movement itself.

Expedited is also different from express. Express usually means a faster tier on a shared parcel network, with set cutoffs and routes. Expedited means a dedicated vehicle or a booked flight planned around one shipment and one deadline.

Each service level fits a different mix of size, distance and urgency.

Service levels The options

The expedited service levels

A cargo van carries less than a straight truck but is often the quickest vehicle to dispatch. That kind of trade-off runs through every expedited service level.

On the ground, an exclusive-use cargo van handles a few pallets, and a straight truck takes heavier pallet loads. A hot shot carries heavy open-deck items such as machinery. Expedited truckload puts a full trailer on the road, often with two drivers on long runs. In the air, next flight out books freight on the first suitable flight. A same day hand carry keeps a small item with a courier, and an air charter books a whole aircraft.

Each level fits a different combination of size, distance and urgency. The next step is matching your shipment to the right one.

Four questions

Size, distance, freight, flights

These four answers decide whether a shipment goes by truck or by air.

Choosing a level Matching the shipment

Choosing the right level

While air is faster than trucking over long distances, a dedicated truck is often quicker for regional runs once airport cutoffs and handling are counted. Choosing the right level comes down to four questions.

First, how big and heavy is the freight? Second, how far is it going compared with the deadline? Third, what is it, since some items cannot fly? Fourth, is there a suitable flight? Small critical items over long distances usually go by hand carry. Crated freight across the country goes next flight out. Regional and oversized freight goes by dedicated truck, and charter covers what nothing scheduled can.

For heavy or oversized freight, a dedicated truck is also far more practical than squeezing it onto a flight. This makes ground the default and air the tool for distance.

Why a broker

Not tied to one fleet

A broker books a licensed carrier or a flight for each load, whichever fits the deadline.

Who delivers Who moves it

Who delivers expedited freight

Expedited freight usually moves through a few kinds of provider, including asset carriers, airlines and brokers. This means the company you call may not be the one driving the truck.

Asset carriers own vans, trucks and trailers and haul freight themselves. Airlines and cargo carriers fly it. Brokers arrange both, matching each shipment to a licensed carrier or a flight and managing the move to delivery. A broker's advantage is range: it is not limited to one fleet or one mode, so it can choose whatever fits the deadline.

ExpeditedFreight.com is a broker. We book a licensed carrier or a flight for each load and stay on it until delivery. Our dispatch team is available around the clock, including weekends and holidays, so you can book an expedited shipment at any hour.

The backup plan

Lean plants need a fast lane

When stock is measured in hours, expedited freight is the safety net.

Just-in-time Lean supply chains

Expedited logistics and just-in-time supply

When a scheduled delivery isn't the right fit for a lean supply chain on a bad day, expedited logistics might be the answer. Just-in-time plants keep only hours of parts at the line, so one late delivery can stop production.

That makes expedited freight the backup plan for a just-in-time operation. When a supplier runs late or a truck breaks down, a dedicated van or straight truck can run the parts direct. If the distance is too great, the parts go on the next flight out. Some shippers also set up recurring urgent lanes for parts that are always time-critical.

ExpeditedFreight.com arranges both the recovery loads and the recurring urgent lanes. One expeditor knows your plant, your dock windows and what is at stake when a delivery slips.

Compare the cost of late

If being late costs more than the faster option, expedited freight pays for itself.

Worth it? When to pay

When expedited is worth it, and when not

No matter how urgent a shipment feels, we're here to tell you honestly whether expedited freight is the right call. Sometimes it is not.

Expedited logistics is worth paying for when a delay would cost more than the faster option. A stopped production line, a missed product launch, an idle crew or a hospital waiting on equipment are typical cases. It is not worth it when the freight can arrive a few days later without consequence. In that case, standard freight or LTL costs far less.

ExpeditedFreight.com weighs ground and air for each shipment and books the option that makes the deadline at a sensible cost. Your shipment then stays with one expeditor from pickup to delivery.

The Real Difference Between a Broker and a Logistics Partner

John Mark Peterson, one of AirFreight.com's top expediting agents, joins Kevin Carpenter to talk about what it's really like inside a traditional truckload brokerage, and why he left it behind. From "boiler room" sales culture to carrier accountability to what happens when a shipment is actually time critical, John Mark breaks down the differences most customers never see.

They cover the vetting process behind AirFreight.com's carrier pool, why "somewhat time critical" doesn't mean the same thing everywhere, and how a company built for the most urgent loads operates differently from a volume-driven brokerage. The episode closes with a fast round of personal questions on the On Air Gauntlet.

Expedited Logistics Questions Answered

What does expedited logistics mean?

Expedited logistics is the planning and movement of time-critical freight by the fastest route that will meet a specific deadline. Instead of waiting for a standard schedule, the shipment gets a dedicated vehicle, a booked flight or a courier, chosen for its size, distance and urgency. It covers ground options such as cargo vans, straight trucks, hot shots and expedited truckloads, and air options such as next flight out, hand carry and air charter. Businesses use it when a delay would be costly, for example when a production line, a project or a customer is waiting on the freight.

What is the difference between shipping and logistics?

Shipping is the physical movement of goods from one place to another. Logistics is the broader process that plans and manages that movement, along with storage, inventory, documentation and tracking. In other words, shipping is one part of logistics. A logistics plan decides which mode to use, which provider to book, when the goods should move and how they will be tracked, while shipping carries out the move. The distinction matters most in expedited freight, where the planning, such as choosing between a truck and a flight, often decides whether the deadline is met.

Which is faster, express or expedited?

It depends on how each term is used, since carriers define them differently. Express usually refers to a premium tier on a shared parcel network, such as next-day or overnight delivery, with fixed cutoffs and routes. Expedited is broader and often faster for freight, because it means a dedicated vehicle or a booked flight planned around one shipment's deadline. A dedicated truck can leave as soon as freight is ready, and a hand carry courier can take a small item on the next flight. For pallets and heavy items, expedited freight is usually the faster option.

Who delivers expedited freight?

Expedited freight is delivered by several kinds of provider. Asset carriers own the vans, trucks and trailers and haul the freight themselves. Airlines and cargo carriers fly it, with trucks at each end. Freight brokers arrange both, matching each shipment with a licensed carrier or flight and managing it to delivery. Couriers handle hand carry service, traveling with small items on commercial flights. Many shippers work with a broker because it can choose among all of these options for each load, rather than being limited to one fleet or one mode.

What is next flight out?

Next flight out, or NFO, is an air freight service that books a shipment on the first available commercial or cargo flight to its destination. A truck picks up the freight and delivers it to the airline before the cutoff, and another truck collects it at the destination airport for final delivery. NFO is used when distance makes a truck too slow for the deadline. Shipments must meet the airline's size, weight and security rules, and some items cannot fly. When no scheduled flight fits, an air charter can be booked instead.

What is air charter?

Air charter means booking an entire aircraft for one shipment, flying on the shipper's schedule rather than an airline's timetable. Charters range from small aircraft for a few urgent parts to large freighters for oversized or heavy cargo. They are used when no scheduled flight has the space, the timing or the route a shipment needs, or when the destination is remote. Charter is usually the most expensive expedited option, so it is reserved for freight where the cost of delay is very high, such as aircraft parts, emergency equipment or critical production components.

What is hand carry?

Hand carry, also known as on-board courier, is a service where a courier travels with a shipment on a commercial flight and keeps it in their possession for the whole trip. The courier collects the item, flies with it as carry-on or checked baggage, and delivers it in person at the destination. It suits small, critical items such as replacement parts, medical devices, prototypes and important documents. Because the item never enters a cargo system, it avoids sorting and warehouse handling, and the chain of custody is simple and clear.

What is an exclusive-use vehicle?

An exclusive-use vehicle is a van or truck reserved for one shipper's freight for the length of a trip. No other shipments are loaded, so it drives directly from pickup to delivery without terminal stops or extra pickups. Exclusive use is the standard for expedited ground freight because it removes the delays and handling of shared networks. The shipper effectively pays for the whole vehicle, whatever its size, from a cargo van to a 53 ft trailer. It is also preferred for fragile or high-value freight, since the shipment stays with one driver and one vehicle throughout.

What is time-definite delivery?

Time-definite delivery is a service in which a shipment is planned to arrive by a specific time or within a set window, rather than on an approximate day. It is common in expedited freight and in supply chains that run to tight schedules, such as just-in-time manufacturing. Meeting a time-definite window usually requires a dedicated vehicle, careful planning of the route and driver hours, and close tracking. If something threatens the window, the provider should warn the shipper early and, where possible, switch to a faster option.

What are the 7 Cs of logistics?

The 7 Cs of logistics are a framework that summarizes what good logistics delivers. A common version lists the right customer, the right product, the right condition, the right cost, the right quantity, the right place and the right time. Some versions swap in terms such as communication, collaboration or capacity. The idea is that logistics succeeds only when all of these line up, not just speed or price. In expedited freight, time and condition usually take priority, which is why dedicated vehicles, direct routes and close tracking are used.
