Expedited Service

In shipping, expedited service means your freight moves on your deadline, not the carrier's schedule. Passport and government expedite requests go through those agencies. For freight, ExpeditedFreight.com provides expedited service by dedicated truck, next flight out, hand carry and charter.

EXPEDITED SERVICE

Expedited Service for Freight That Runs on Your Date

Standard freight service fits your shipment into a carrier's network. It shares a truck with other loads, moves through terminals and arrives when the schedule allows. That works until a date is fixed and the schedule cannot meet it.

ExpeditedFreight.com provides expedited service for freight. We dispatch a dedicated truck or book a flight planned around the date your shipment has to arrive, and one expeditor stays with it until delivery. We do not handle passport or government expedite requests.

Expedited service is not one product. It ranges from a cargo van on a short run to a flight across the country, and each option trades cost against time. We start with your deadline and the size of the shipment, then recommend the service level that meets the date without overpaying for speed.

The three services below are the most common levels of expedited service. The page then explains what the term means in shipping and how the levels compare.

DEDICATED GROUND box-trucks

Box Trucks

A box truck carries several pallets on a direct run, up to about 5,000 lbs. Nothing else is loaded, so there are no stops on the way. It fits store restocks, plant parts and job site deliveries that cannot wait for an LTL truck.

FAST HEAVY FREIGHT hot-shot-truck

Hot Shot Trucks

A hot shot pickup and flatbed trailer carries up to about 16,000 lbs. It is a quick way to move machinery and equipment. Because the truck is dispatched for one load, it can leave as soon as the freight is ready.

Next Flight Out

We book the first available commercial flight and arrange trucks at each end. It covers long distances when a truck cannot make the date. It is the usual choice when a ground run would take more than a day.

Expedited service In shipping

What expedited service means in shipping

In shipping, expedited service means moving a shipment faster than the standard service would. For freight, that usually means a truck or van that carries only your shipment straight to the delivery. It can also mean a booked flight with trucks at each end. Standard service, by contrast, shares space and follows a network schedule.

The term is also used for passports and government filings, which are separate services handled by those agencies. This page covers freight.

Cheapest level that makes it

Dedicated truck, team truck, next flight out, hand carry or charter. Each costs more and saves more.

Service levels The levels

The levels of expedited service

A dedicated truck is faster than standard freight but slower than a flight over long distances. That trade-off runs through every level of expedited service.

A direct dedicated truck, from a cargo van to a 53 ft trailer, runs straight to the delivery with no terminal stops. A two-driver truck keeps moving on long runs because the drivers take turns. Next flight out books the first suitable flight, with trucks handling pickup and delivery. Same day hand carry puts a small item with a courier on the plane. An air charter books a whole aircraft when no scheduled flight fits.

Each level costs more than the one before it and saves more time. The right one is the least expensive level that still makes your deadline.

Compare the cost of late

If a delay costs more than the faster option, expedited service pays for itself.

Worth it? When to pay for it

Is expedited service worth it?

Providers of expedited service usually advise paying for it only when time is worth more than the premium. This means the answer depends on what a delay would cost you.

It is worth it when a production line, a crew or a customer is waiting. A firm contract date or a launch that would lose sales also justifies it. It is usually not worth it when the freight can arrive a few days later without consequence. In that case, standard freight or guaranteed LTL costs less.

A quick way to decide is to compare the cost of the faster service with the cost of the delay it prevents. ExpeditedFreight.com helps you make that comparison before you book.

Most delays start at the dock

Accurate details, ready freight and a reachable contact keep expedited service fast.

Avoiding delays What slows it down

What delays an expedited job

When a vague request isn't the right fit for an urgent shipment, a complete one might be the answer. Most delays to expedited service start before the truck arrives.

Wrong dimensions or weight can mean the wrong vehicle shows up. A dock that closes early or has no one to load can hold a truck for hours. Missing paperwork, such as a bill of lading or customs documents for Canada or Mexico, can stop a shipment at pickup or the border. Unclear contacts mean nobody answers when the driver calls. Freight that is not ready on time wastes the head start.

Each of these is easy to avoid with a few minutes of preparation. ExpeditedFreight.com checks these details with you when you book, so the shipment can move the moment the truck arrives.

North American air cargo demand grows as capacity shrinks

More demand and less flight space heading into peak season can make air-based expedited service harder to book, which raises the value of ground options.

Why it is happening

Global goods trade keeps growing and peak season is approaching. Airlines are also carrying exceptionally high fuel costs, according to IATA's chief economist.

Expedited Service Questions Answered

What is the meaning of expedited service?

Expedited service means handling something faster than the standard process. In shipping, it means moving a shipment on a faster schedule than standard service, usually with a dedicated vehicle or a booked flight planned around the shipper's deadline. The term is also used by government agencies for faster processing of passports, visas and filings, which are separate services handled by those agencies. For freight, expedited service costs more than standard because the shipment gets its own vehicle or flight, and it is used when a delay would be costly.

How is expedited service different from standard service?

Standard freight service shares space with other shipments and follows a carrier's network schedule, often passing through terminals where freight is sorted and transferred. Delivery dates are estimates, and the cost is lower. Expedited service gives the shipment a vehicle or flight of its own, dispatched when the freight is ready and planned around a specific deadline. It skips terminals and can run nights and weekends. The trade-off is cost: expedited service carries a premium because the shipper is paying for dedicated capacity and speed.

What shipments qualify for expedited service?

Any shipment can qualify for expedited service if the standard schedule cannot meet its deadline. Common examples include replacement parts for a stopped production line, components for a project, retail stock for a launch, medical equipment, legal documents with filing dates and freight that missed its original pickup. Size is not a barrier: expedited service ranges from a single envelope carried by a courier to a full trailer with two drivers. Some materials have restrictions, particularly on aircraft, so the contents should be described when requesting service.

What is a cutoff time?

A cutoff time is the latest time a shipment can be tendered to make a particular service or departure. Parcel carriers set daily cutoffs for overnight or same-day service, and airlines set cutoffs for cargo on each flight, after which the freight waits for the next one. Missing a cutoff can add a day or more. Dedicated expedited trucks avoid most cutoffs because they leave as soon as the freight is loaded, but air-based expedited service still depends on airline cutoffs. Booking early and having freight ready helps meet them.

What is next flight out?

Next flight out, or NFO, is an air freight service that books a shipment on the first available commercial or cargo flight to its destination. A truck picks up the freight and delivers it to the airline before the cutoff, and another truck collects it at the destination airport for final delivery. NFO is used when the distance is too great for a truck to meet the deadline. Shipments must fit the airline's size, weight and security requirements. For small items, hand carry keeps the shipment with a courier, and charter covers larger freight.

What is hand carry?

Hand carry, also called on-board courier, is an expedited service where a courier travels with a shipment on a commercial flight and keeps it in their possession for the whole trip. The courier collects the item, flies with it as carry-on or checked baggage, and delivers it in person. It suits small, critical items such as replacement parts, prototypes, medical devices and important documents. Because the item never enters a cargo system, it avoids sorting and warehouse handling, and the chain of custody is simple.

What is a dedicated vehicle?

A dedicated vehicle is a van or truck reserved for one shipment for the whole trip. No other freight is loaded, so it goes directly from pickup to delivery without stops at terminals or other customers. Dedicated vehicles are the core of expedited ground service, ranging from cargo vans for a few boxes to full 53 ft trailers. The shipper pays for the whole vehicle, which costs more than shared service but saves time and reduces handling. Dedicated vehicles can also be dispatched at night and on weekends.

What is an air charter?

An air charter is a flight booked exclusively for one shipment. The aircraft is chosen to fit the freight, from small planes for a few urgent parts to large freighters for oversized cargo, and it departs on the shipper's schedule. Charters are used when no scheduled flight has the space, timing or route needed, or when the destination is remote. Trucks handle pickup and final delivery. Air charter is the most expensive level of expedited service, so it is used when the cost of delay is higher still.

What causes expedited shipments to be delayed?

Most delays to expedited shipments start before pickup. Common causes include incorrect dimensions or weight, which can mean the wrong vehicle arrives; freight that is not ready at the stated time; docks that close early or have no one available to load; missing paperwork such as a bill of lading or customs documents; and unreachable contacts at either end. On the road, traffic, weather and border crossings can add time. Accurate details, ready freight and reachable contacts prevent most delays.

Is expedited service available on weekends?

Expedited freight service is typically available nights, weekends and holidays, because dedicated vehicles are dispatched when the freight is ready rather than on a business-day schedule. The main limits are the people and places at each end: the pickup and delivery locations need someone to load, receive and sign for the freight. Air-based service also depends on flight schedules, which may be thinner on weekends. Confirming dock hours and contacts at both ends when booking keeps weekend expedited service on track.
