LOCAL FREIGHT

Local Freight Delivery, Across Town Today

Pallets that need to cross town are too big for a parcel route and too urgent for an LTL terminal, where they may wait overnight to be sorted. A store restock, a part for a plant across the metro or materials for a job site usually need to arrive the same day.

ExpeditedFreight.com sends a truck sized to the load, straight from your dock to the receiver, in metros across the US. The same truck can carry on to a nearby city when the delivery is regional.

Local deliveries depend on the site. Some receivers have a dock, while others need a liftgate, an inside delivery or a specific time window. Tell us what the receiving site needs, and we will send a truck that can deliver without a second trip.

The three trucks below handle most local freight. The page then explains what counts as local freight and how to choose the vehicle.

QUICK METRO RUNS sprinter-vans

Sprinter Vans

A cargo van carries up to 3,000 lbs and handles tight streets and loading zones. It suits cartons, parts and one or two pallets. Vans can usually be dispatched within hours for same-day delivery.

STORE AND SITE DELIVERIES box-trucks

Box Trucks

A 12 to 16 ft box truck carries several pallets, up to about 5,000 lbs. Many have a liftgate for curbside and no-dock deliveries. It handles freight that is too big for a van but does not need a large truck.

Large Straight Trucks

A 22 to 26 ft straight truck takes up to about 9,000 lbs. It moves heavier pallet loads across the metro in one trip. Most come with a liftgate, which helps at stores and job sites without a dock.

Choosing a vehicle Vehicle fit

Choosing the vehicle for your load

When a cargo van isn't the right fit for your shipment, a box truck or straight truck might be the answer. The choice comes down to the number of pallets, the weight and what the delivery site can handle.

A Sprinter van carries up to 3,000 lbs, enough for a few pallets or a load of cartons. A box truck takes up to 5,000 lbs. A large straight truck carries up to 9,000 lbs, often with a liftgate for sites without a dock. A hot shot handles open-deck items such as machinery. A 53 ft trailer takes a full load.

Measure each piece and total the weight before you book. We match the vehicle to those details and the delivery site, so the truck that arrives can load and unload without trouble.

Pickup and timing Pickup and same day

How pickup and same-day local delivery work

At ExpeditedFreight.com, we specialize in local freight runs that go from your dock to the delivery address with no stops in between. A same-day run starts with a booking that has the details right.

That means the pickup and delivery addresses, the ready time, and the hours each dock is open. A truck is then dispatched to your pickup. Whether a delivery happens the same day depends on booking early enough to load and drive before the receiving dock closes. Nights and weekends are available when both ends can receive freight.

As with most local trucking, distance, the size of the truck and how soon you need it all affect the cost. Our dispatch team is available around the clock, including weekends and holidays, so you can book a local delivery at any hour.

Tell us about the site

A dock, a liftgate or a residential street each call for a different truck.

Delivery needs At the delivery end

Liftgates, no-dock and residential deliveries

From a loading dock to a storefront to a house, we arrange the truck that fits the delivery site. The delivery end decides the vehicle as much as the freight does.

A site with a dock can take any truck that backs up to it. Without a dock, a liftgate truck lowers pallets to the ground, and someone needs a pallet jack to move them. Inside delivery means the driver brings the freight past the door. Residential addresses often need a smaller truck and an appointment time.

Good prep makes any delivery faster. Shrink-wrap and label each pallet, count the pieces and have the bill of lading ready. ExpeditedFreight.com notes every site detail when you book, so the right truck and equipment arrive.

How Supreme Court Ruling Is Reshaping Final Mile Risk Management

In this episode of On Air with Airfreight.com, host Kevin Carpenter sits down with Bryan Ice, a certified insurance counselor and co-founder of B3, a specialized insurance and risk management program built for final mile, same-day, courier, and customized delivery.

Bryan shares how B3 got its start, why final mile has always been a misunderstood niche for insurers, and what the recent Supreme Court ruling in Montgomery v. Carib Transport means for freight brokers and motor carriers going forward. We also get into how COVID reshaped final mile delivery for good, why thin-margin operators are headed for trouble, and how B3 is building a driver grading system to raise the bar on vetting.

Truck tonnage rises as capacity keeps contracting

Freight volumes ticked up in September while the number of trucks kept shrinking, which affects how quickly local loads can be covered.

What is happening

According to TheTrucker.com, trucking activity rose 0.8% in September after a small August decline, based on the American Trucking Associations' tonnage index.

We are seeing soft tonnage levels, but capacity is still contracting, which is leading to a better market for motor carriers.

Why it is happening

Tonnage is soft but steady, and the index was unchanged from a year earlier. Meanwhile, trucking capacity is still contracting, according to ATA's chief economist.

WhatWe Provide

The Right Mode, Every Time

Local freight still needs the right truck. Your freight gets its own vehicle, matched to the pallet count and both sites, running straight from your dock to the delivery address. If the site has no dock, we send a liftgate truck. You never pay for a 53 ft trailer to carry two pallets across town.

Local Freight Delivery Questions Answered

What is considered freight delivery?

Freight delivery is the transport of goods that are too large, heavy or numerous for a parcel network. That usually means palletized shipments, crated items, machinery, building materials or bulk quantities of product. Freight moves on trucks, trailers, rail or aircraft rather than in parcel vans, and it travels with a bill of lading that lists the pieces, weight and parties. Receiving it often needs a loading dock, a liftgate or a forklift. Parcel shipping, by contrast, handles individual boxes a person can lift. Local freight delivery is simply freight moved within a metro area or to a nearby city, often by a dedicated truck.

How does freight differ from a parcel?

A parcel is a single package, usually light enough for one person to carry, that moves through sorting hubs on a carrier's fixed routes. Freight is larger: pallets, crates, heavy equipment or many boxes shipped together. Parcels are labeled and priced individually, while freight is described on a bill of lading by piece count, weight and dimensions. Freight needs equipment to load and unload, such as a dock, forklift or liftgate. Parcel carriers set weight and size limits, and anything beyond them moves as freight. A shipment of several boxes can go either way, but once it is stacked on a pallet it is almost always freight.

What is a liftgate?

A liftgate is a powered platform mounted on the back of a truck that raises and lowers freight between the truck bed and the ground. It is used when the pickup or delivery location has no loading dock, such as a storefront, office, job site or home. The driver rolls a pallet onto the platform with a pallet jack and lowers it to ground level, or raises it when loading. Liftgates are common on box trucks and straight trucks but not on most full-size trailers. If either end of a shipment lacks a dock, mention it when booking so a truck with a liftgate is sent.

What is a freight broker?

A freight broker is a licensed company that arranges transportation for shippers by matching their loads with carriers that have the right trucks. The broker does not usually own trucks. Instead, it finds an available vehicle, agrees the rate, books the carrier and manages the shipment through delivery, including tracking and paperwork. Brokers must hold operating authority from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and carry a surety bond. For shippers, a broker offers access to many vehicle types and carriers with one call, which helps when a load needs a specific size of truck or must move quickly.

What is a freight forwarder?

A freight forwarder organizes shipments on behalf of a shipper, usually for international moves. It books space with ocean lines, airlines, railroads and trucking companies, combines shipments, prepares export and import documents and often arranges customs clearance. Forwarders coordinate the entire journey from origin to destination across several modes. Some also offer warehousing and insurance. For a purely domestic local or regional freight move, a forwarder is rarely needed. A freight broker or a carrier is the more direct choice, since there are no customs requirements or ocean and air bookings to manage.

How does a courier differ from a freight carrier?

A courier moves small items such as documents, envelopes and packages, usually by car, bike or small van, and often on routes that combine many stops. It is built for speed on small shipments within a city or region. A freight carrier owns trucks and trailers and moves larger shipments, such as pallets, crates and full loads, under federal operating authority. Couriers rarely handle heavy freight or offer liftgates and large trucks. Freight carriers are not set up for single envelopes. Some services overlap, such as a cargo van carrying a few pallets on an urgent run, but the size of the shipment usually decides which one fits.

What is final-mile delivery?

Final-mile delivery, also called last-mile delivery, is the last leg of a shipment's journey, from a local warehouse, terminal or distribution center to the end customer's address. It is often the most complex part of the trip because it involves many stops, narrow streets, specific delivery windows and sites without loading docks. For freight, final-mile service may include liftgate delivery, inside delivery, appointments and sometimes assembly or installation. Local freight delivery overlaps with final mile, but it also covers point-to-point moves, such as a pallet going directly from one business to another across town in a dedicated truck.

What is a bill of lading?

A bill of lading, or BOL, is the shipping document that travels with a freight shipment. It lists the shipper and receiver, the pickup and delivery addresses, and a description of the freight, including the number of pieces or pallets, the weight and any special handling notes. The driver signs it at pickup to confirm what was loaded, and the receiver signs it at delivery to confirm what arrived. The signed copy often becomes the proof of delivery. The BOL also acts as a receipt for the goods and, in many cases, as part of the contract between the shipper and the carrier.

What is proof of delivery?

Proof of delivery, or POD, is the record showing that a shipment reached its destination. It typically includes the delivery date and time, the name and signature of the person who received the freight, and any notes about its condition. Many carriers capture this electronically, sometimes with a photo. For freight, the signed bill of lading or delivery receipt usually serves as the POD. Shippers use it to confirm delivery to their customers, close invoices and support claims. Anyone receiving freight should note damage or missing pieces on the POD before signing, because a clean signature suggests everything arrived in good condition.

What is a residential freight delivery?

A residential freight delivery is a freight shipment delivered to a home rather than a business. Homes rarely have loading docks or forklifts, and streets may be too narrow for a full-size trailer, so these deliveries often use a smaller truck with a liftgate. Drivers usually call ahead to set an appointment, because someone must be present to receive and sign for the freight. The freight is typically left at the curb or garage unless inside delivery is arranged. Common examples include furniture, appliances, fitness equipment and building materials. Mentioning a residential address when booking ensures the right truck and equipment are sent.
