Logistics Delivery

The right delivery option depends on what you are shipping and when it has to arrive. ExpeditedFreight.com matches your shipment to a dedicated truck or a flight. One expeditor tracks it to a signed delivery.

Logistics delivery gets goods from the shipper to a receiver who signs for them.

Logistics delivery What it means

What logistics delivery means

From a box of parts headed across town to a full trailer of finished goods crossing the country, logistics delivery is the part of logistics that gets goods to the receiver. It covers the pickup, the trip and the handover, whether the shipment is a single parcel or a load of pallets on a truck.

Three parties are usually involved. The shipper sends the goods, a carrier or broker arranges and moves them, and the receiver signs for them. This page explains delivery for shippers, not logistics jobs or company rankings.

ExpeditedFreight.com arranges dedicated deliveries across the US, Canada and Mexico. Our team gives you direct access to trucks of every size and air options when the road is too slow, backed by one expeditor who manages each delivery from pickup to drop-off.

Delivery types Logistics delivery

The main types of delivery

When you compare delivery options, a few types come up. Standard delivery moves shipments through scheduled networks over several days and costs the least. Same day delivery sends a vehicle direct and arrives today, usually within a metro area or region. Expedited delivery puts a dedicated vehicle or a faster mode on the shipment when standard timing is too slow.

Freight delivery covers pallets and crates on trucks, from box trucks to 53 ft trailers and flatbeds. Final mile delivery is the last leg from a hub or warehouse to the receiver's door.

We support each type with dedicated trucks and air options. It's also common to combine them, so ExpeditedFreight.com may fly a shipment and deliver the final mile by truck.

Straight truck (box truck)
Rule of thumb

Weight first, then deadline

Weight and pallets pick the vehicle; distance and deadline pick truck or air.

Service selector Logistics delivery

Which service fits your shipment

A straight truck carries up to 9,000 lbs, larger than a box truck but small enough for sites without a full dock. Start with weight and pallet count. A Sprinter van carries up to 3,000 lbs, and a box truck up to 5,000 lbs. A hot shot takes up to 16,000 lbs of heavy equipment on a flatbed or gooseneck trailer.

Full loads go on a 53 ft dry van, up to 42,000 lbs, or a flatbed, up to 48,000 lbs. Then weigh distance and deadline: a dedicated truck runs direct, and air takes over when the road is too slow. As with most expedited freight, distance, weight, the type of truck and how soon you need it all affect the cost.

We match the vehicle to your shipment and deadline. ExpeditedFreight.com confirms the details first, so the right truck arrives.

Tracking Logistics delivery

How tracking really works

While parcel tracking shows a list of scans, tracking on a dedicated truck works differently. In a parcel or shared network, the shipment updates when it is scanned at pickup, at each hub and when it goes out for delivery. Between scans, tracking can go quiet for hours, and a delay may not show until the delivery is missed.

On a dedicated truck, the shipment is tracked by GPS where available and by an expeditor who checks in with the driver. Ask for updates at pickup, along the route and before arrival, and early word of any delay so the receiver can plan.

For urgent deliveries, live tracking provides a balance of visibility and control that scan-based tracking can't match. This makes ExpeditedFreight.com's one-expeditor model a practical choice when you need to know where the freight is.

Tracked delivery

A tracked delivery, step by step

Every delivery ExpeditedFreight.com books follows six steps, and you hear from your expeditor at each one.

  1. 01

    Book the delivery

Share the pickup and delivery addresses, contacts, weight, pallet count and deadline. Your expeditor recommends the right vehicle and confirms the quote with you.

    • Shipment details
  2. 02

    Dispatch and driver details

A dedicated truck is dispatched for your shipment only. You receive the driver details and the expected arrival time at the pickup location.

    • Driver details
  3. 03

    Pickup confirmed

The driver loads the freight and signs the bill of lading. Your expeditor confirms the pickup with the time and piece count, so you know it is moving.

  4. 04

    In-transit updates

The truck runs direct to the receiver. You get updates along the route, and your expeditor calls right away if traffic or weather changes the plan.

    • GPS updates
  5. 05

    Arrival notice

Before the truck arrives, the receiver is told when to expect it, so the dock, a forklift or a person to sign is ready on time.

  6. 06

    Signed proof of delivery

The receiver signs for the freight and notes any exceptions. You receive proof of delivery with the name, signature and time, which closes the delivery.

Proof and coverage Logistics delivery

Proof of delivery and coverage

Delivery providers usually close each shipment with a proof of delivery, including the receiver's name, signature and the time of the handover. This means the shipper has a record whenever a customer asks whether something arrived. Many proofs also note damage or shortages, and some include photos.

Before you ship valuable goods, ask how loss or damage is covered and whether a declared value applies, because standard coverage may not match what the goods are worth. At delivery, the receiver should count the pieces and note any damage before signing, since a clean signature makes a later claim harder.

Our dispatch team is available around the clock, including weekends and holidays, to help if a delivery has a problem. ExpeditedFreight.com sends you the signed proof to make sure every delivery is closed properly.

How we deliver Logistics delivery

How ExpeditedFreight.com delivers

ExpeditedFreight.com specializes in dedicated deliveries that run from your dock to final delivery with no transfers. We match a truck to your shipment, from a Sprinter van to a 53 ft dry van or flatbed, and the truck carries only your freight. When the road is too slow for the deadline, we arrange air freight and deliver the final leg by truck.

Your expeditor confirms the pickup, sends updates on the road, tells the receiver when to expect the truck and sends you signed proof of delivery. We work across the US, Canada and Mexico, around the clock.

This direct approach removes the hub transfers where freight waits or goes missing, which reduces delays and cuts the risk of a disputed delivery. Your shipment stays with one truck and one expeditor from pickup to signature.

Logistics Delivery Questions Answered

What does logistics delivery mean?

Logistics delivery is the part of logistics that moves goods from where they are to the person or business receiving them. It covers arranging the pickup, choosing the vehicle or mode, transporting the goods and handing them over with a signed record. Logistics delivery ranges from small parcels moving through delivery networks to pallets and full truckloads moving on dedicated trucks. For businesses, it is the step customers notice most, because a late or damaged delivery affects them directly. The right delivery approach depends on the size of the shipment, the distance and how quickly it must arrive.

What is standard delivery?

Standard delivery is the regular, non-urgent delivery service offered by parcel and freight networks. Shipments move on scheduled routes through hubs and terminals, often alongside many other shipments, and arrive within a typical number of business days depending on distance. Standard delivery is the least expensive option because the network can plan and combine shipments efficiently. It suits goods without a firm deadline, such as routine restocking. When a shipment has to arrive by a fixed time or a specific day, same day or expedited delivery is usually needed instead.

What is same day delivery?

Same day delivery means a shipment is picked up and delivered on the same day. It usually uses a dedicated vehicle or courier that goes directly from pickup to delivery without hub sorting, which is why it is most common within a metro area or region. Over longer distances, same day delivery may use a flight with drivers at each end. Same day delivery costs more than standard service, but businesses use it for urgent parts, customer orders and documents that cannot wait. The pickup time and the receiver's hours determine whether same day is possible.

What is expedited delivery?

Expedited delivery is any service faster than standard delivery for a given shipment. In freight, it often means a dedicated truck that carries only one customer's shipment and runs directly to the destination. It can also mean air freight when trucks are too slow. Expedited delivery suits shipments that would miss a deadline on standard schedules, such as production parts or replacement equipment. It costs more than standard service because the vehicle or flight is dedicated to the shipment.

What is freight delivery?

Freight delivery is the delivery of goods that are too large or heavy for parcel services, such as pallets, crates, machinery and full truckloads. Freight moves on trucks ranging from box trucks and straight trucks to 53 ft dry vans and flatbeds, and it is documented with a bill of lading. Freight deliveries often involve loading docks, forklifts or liftgates, and many receivers require appointments. Freight can move on standard schedules or on expedited dedicated trucks when timing is tight. The type of truck depends on the freight's weight, size and how it is loaded and unloaded.

What is final mile delivery?

Final mile delivery is the last leg of a shipment, from a hub, warehouse, terminal or airport to the end receiver. It is often the most complex part of delivery because it deals with individual addresses, traffic, access restrictions and receiving hours. In freight, final mile often involves pallets, liftgates and appointments, and sometimes inside or white glove service for heavy items. Final mile is also called last mile delivery. Planning it well, with the right vehicle and accurate site details, is what turns a shipment that is nearly there into one that is delivered.

What is a dedicated delivery?

A dedicated delivery uses a vehicle reserved for one customer's shipment for the entire trip. The truck or van carries no other freight and drives directly from pickup to delivery, with no hub stops or transfers. Dedicated deliveries are used for urgent, valuable, fragile or large shipments, and for deliveries that need a signed handover to a named person. Because the vehicle is reserved, a dedicated delivery costs more than a shared route, but it is faster, easier to track and reduces the handling that leads to damage or loss along the way.

What is scan-based tracking?

Scan-based tracking records a shipment's progress each time its label is scanned at a point in the network, such as pickup, arrival at a hub, departure and out for delivery. It is the standard way parcel and shared freight networks report status. Between scans, the shipment's location is not updated, so tracking can appear unchanged for hours even while the shipment is moving. A delay may only show when a scan is missed. GPS tracking on a dedicated vehicle, combined with updates from a person managing the shipment, gives a more continuous picture of where the freight is.

What is proof of delivery?

Proof of delivery, or POD, is the record confirming that a shipment was delivered and accepted. It usually includes the receiver's printed name, signature, and the date and time of delivery, along with notes of any damage or shortage. Some providers add photos of the freight at the door or dock. Businesses use proof of delivery to confirm completion to customers, release payment and support claims. Receivers should count and inspect the freight before signing, because a clean signature can make it harder to claim for damage found later.

What is declared value?

Declared value is the value a shipper states for a shipment when booking, used to set how much a carrier will pay if the goods are lost or damaged. Without it, a carrier's liability is often limited to a standard amount in its terms, which may be well below what the goods are worth. Declaring a higher value can increase the cost of the shipment. For valuable goods, shippers should ask how declared value works, what the standard liability is and whether separate cargo insurance would provide better protection for the full value.
